Tutor

tutor
ˈtjuːtə/
noun
a private teacher, typically one who teaches a single student

I love the joys and challenges of working with individual students — as well as those ‘lightbulb’ moments when you can actually see a student realising what they know and what they can do with that knowledge.  Makes my day, that does.

“Pippa was amazing. She helped me gain confidence and she had such patience and commitment setting me homework that interested me. Can’t thank her enough for her help.” Jack, GCSE student

“Pippa was an amazing help to my son with his English GCSE exam preparations. She was able to give him the confidence and interest in the subject to do well, and was able to relate his interests to reading and writing from the curriculum. My son is now 19, doing a degree at Portsmouth University, and will go on to Sandhurst to become an Army officer. All possible thanks to Pippa’s help.” Samantha, Jack’s mum

Not everyone finds writing easy — or enjoys the challenge of finding just the right word.  I get that.  I understand, too, that the pressures of GCSEs and A’ levels can sometimes mean that a little extra support can be a good thing.

“The tutoring provided unique opportunities for one on one conversations which helped to not only improve my writing but my ideas and understanding about texts. I would definitely recommend her for any GCSE students.”  Josh, student

I work one-to-one with students from Year 10 onwards — right up to post-graduates, with the focus firmly on developing the skills and the confidence that they need to get the grades they need and deserve.  I’m also very happy working with home-schooled students or those who are having difficulty attending school regularly.

It’s not just about school, though.  If you’re keen to improve your own writing — whether it’s for your business or for pleasure — I’m very happy working with adults, too.

“Soon after meeting Pippa, I suspected she’d be just the person to help me with a personal weakness I’d struggled with for a few years — lack of confidence about putting pen to paper and writing. When I suggested a few sessions to help me along, Pippa quickly put a plan in place and seemed to know how I would best respond. Our sessions were informal, entirely centred around my own self limiting beliefs and how I would work around them. We focused on little steps and set a daily writing challenge. Pippa understands the needs of the individual, and has vast experience upon which to draw.”  Emma, business owner

Whether it’s a few tweaks to get a student back on the right track or more sustained support, I’m always happy to meet and talk through what you need before we get started.

Our initial meeting (30 mins) is free of charge.  We need to see if it’s going to work, both ways, and there’s no obligation at all.  Each one-hour session after that is £40 if you come to me — I teach in my office in the centre of Tring — or £50 if I come to you.
